Getting started
How does the AI meal scan work?
Tap "Snap a meal" on the Add screen, take a photo, optionally add a note ("with extra olive oil", "large portion"), and tap Analyze. Plately's backend forwards the image to GPT-4o vision and returns an estimated name, serving size, calories, and macro breakdown. The whole flow takes 5–10 seconds. The photo is not stored on our servers — only the resulting nutrition values are saved on your device.
What's a "trial scan" vs a "paid scan"?
New users get a small handful of free trial scans on first launch so you can try the AI feature before buying. Trial scans behave identically to paid scans for meal logging, but they don't pay for AI Weekly Insights reports — only paid scan credits can.
Does the app work offline?
Yes for everything except AI scans and the AI Weekly Insights report — those require network. Meal logs, drink tracking, fasting timer, weight, profile, and saved meals all work offline. You can manually log calories without using the AI if you prefer.
Pricing & packs
How much do scan packs cost?
Four one-time packs: Snack (50 scans, $2.99) → Meal (200 scans, $6.99) → Feast (1,000 scans, $19.99) → Mega (2,000 scans, $34.99). Per-scan cost drops with each tier — Mega is roughly 1.75¢ per scan, the best value. No subscriptions, no recurring charges. Scans never expire.
What happens if I accidentally scan something that isn't food?
The note sheet before each capture warns you: "Only food photos can be analyzed. Non-food uploads still use a scan credit." If the AI determines your photo isn't a meal (a pet, a screenshot, etc.), the scan is still used — the AI call has already been made on our side. The trade-off is clear up-front so there are no surprises.
What about NSFW or inappropriate uploads?
Every image is pre-screened by an automated moderation service before AI analysis. Sexual, violent, self-harm, and CSAM-adjacent content is rejected immediately — no AI call, no scan credit deducted. Repeated attempts may result in suspension of the AI scan feature.
I bought a pack on one device. Can I use it on another?
Yes. On the second device, tap Profile → Restore purchases. Plately re-verifies your purchases with Apple and credits the scan balance to that device. Purchases are tied to your Apple ID.
Can I get a refund?
All refunds are processed through Apple (Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions / Purchase history → Report a Problem). When Apple grants a refund, we receive a server-to-server notification and automatically deduct the refunded credits from your balance.
AI Weekly Insights
What is the AI Weekly Insights report?
A personalised read of your eating patterns from the previous 7 days — specific wins, improvements to focus on, and one suggestion for next week. Powered by Anthropic's Claude. Find it on the Progress tab, below your Avg Daily Calories card.
How much does it cost?
The first report each ISO week is free. Additional reports in the same week cost 2 paid scan credits each. Trial scans cannot pay for an insights report — only paid credits can.
Why do I need 3 days of meals before unlocking?
The AI needs enough data to find patterns. With fewer than 3 logged days, the report would just say "you don't have much data yet" — not useful. The 3-day minimum keeps the insight quality high.
Drinks, fasting & weight
Do drinks count toward my daily calories?
Yes for caloric drinks. Coffee and tea ask whether you added sugar (+24 kcal per cup); soda asks Regular vs Zero. Water is always 0 kcal. The Hydration card on Home shows total mL and a calorie footnote when applicable.
How does the fasting timer work?
Choose a protocol (14:10, 16:8, 18:6, 20:4, or OMAD). Tap Start when you begin. A ring timer shows progress; phase cards (Settling in → Burning glucose → Ketosis → Deep burn) advance as you cross 25/50/75/100% of the target. Get a local notification 1 hour before the target end so you know you're almost there.
I forgot to start the timer. Can I backdate it?
Yes. Tap the "Started" cell on the active timer to pick a backdated start time (up to 72 hours back). Similarly, tap "End fast early" → "Earlier today…" to end a fast at a past time.
Does Plately calculate BMI?
Yes. The Progress tab shows your BMI value, the healthy weight range for your height, and a colour-coded scale. BMI is a rough indicator — it's not a substitute for professional advice.
Privacy & data
Are my meal photos uploaded anywhere?
They transit to our backend and to the AI vision provider for analysis only. They are not retained on our servers, in our database, or in long-term logs. After the response is returned, the photo bytes are discarded.
Do I need an account?
No. Plately uses an anonymous device ID generated on first launch. There's nothing to sign up for — no name, email, or password. Your data stays on your device.
How do I delete all my data?
Profile → Delete all data. This wipes every locally stored entry — meals, drinks, weight, fasting sessions, profile, reminders. It also removes any uploaded profile picture from your device.
